Half term Windsor 2026 is here and if you are still looking for somewhere to take the family, you need to know about Windsor.

It is one of those destinations that works for everyone. Kids are happy, parents are happy, and you come back feeling like you actually had a proper break rather than just a change of scenery.

Why Windsor Works So Well for Half Term

Windsor has everything a family needs within a short walk or drive of the town centre. The castle is right there, Legoland is 10 minutes away, and the River Thames, Windsor Great Park, and Eton are all on the doorstep.

More importantly, Windsor is easy. Two train stations connect directly to London, Heathrow is 7 miles away, and parking is available close to the town centre. You are not spending half the holiday in a car.

What to Do in Windsor with Kids

Windsor Castle is the obvious starting point. The State Apartments, St George’s Chapel, and the Changing of the Guard are all genuinely impressive for children and adults alike. Book tickets in advance during half term as it gets busy.

Legoland Windsor is 10 minutes from the town centre and easily fills a full day. If you have younger children this is non-negotiable. Book well in advance as half term is one of their busiest weeks of the year.

Windsor Great Park covers over 4,800 acres and is completely free to explore. The Long Walk stretching from the castle to the Copper Horse statue is one of the most spectacular walks in England and children love the open space to run.

The River Thames runs along the edge of Windsor and Eton, with boat trips available from the town bridge. A relaxed hour on the water is a great way to break up a busy day.

Eton High Street is a five minute walk across the bridge and worth an explore. The independent shops, cafes, and the famous school buildings make for an interesting half hour with older children.

Where to Stay in Windsor for Half Term

This is where most families get stuck. Windsor hotels are expensive, small, and not designed for groups of five, six, or seven people travelling together.

Our apartment on Thames Street sleeps up to 7 guests across 4 bedrooms, which makes it ideal for families who want space to actually spread out. The fully equipped kitchen means you are not eating every meal out, which saves a significant amount over a week away. The lounge is large enough for everyone to relax together in the evenings, and Windsor Castle is literally across the street.

Half term availability is limited. If you are interested in staying with us, check dates and book direct at eccentricproperties.com for the best rate.

Practical Tips for Half Term in Windsor

Book Legoland and Windsor Castle tickets well in advance. Both sell out during half term week.

Arrive in Windsor early in the morning before the day visitors arrive. The town is significantly quieter before 10am.

Windsor has several good family restaurants within walking distance of the town centre including Honest Burgers, Coco di Mama, and various cafes along the high street.

There is no on-site parking at our apartment but several secure public car parks are within a short walk of Thames Street.

Windsor and Eton Central station is 350 yards from our front door with direct services to London Paddington. Windsor and Eton Riverside is equally close with services to London Waterloo.
