Autumn in Windsor 2026: Things to Do, Events & Where to Stay
Autumn is a lovely time to visit Windsor. The summer crowds begin to ease, Windsor Great Park changes colour and there is plenty happening across the town, from family-friendly Halloween events to theatre, history and days out.
Whether you’re planning an October half-term break, a family trip to LEGOLAND or simply a weekend in Windsor, here are some of the best things to do in Windsor this autumn.
Visit Windsor Castle
No trip to Windsor is complete without visiting Windsor Castle – and autumn can be a particularly good time to explore.
The Castle is right in the centre of town, so it’s easy to combine a visit with lunch, shopping, a walk along the Thames or an afternoon exploring Eton.
For October half-term 2026, Windsor Castle is also running A Castle Under Siege, with family activities taking place on selected days from 24 October and included with a Castle ticket or 1-Year Pass.
If you’re visiting earlier in the autumn, look out for other special activities and events taking place at the Castle throughout September and October.
Our tip: Check opening arrangements before your visit, particularly if you’re hoping to visit St George’s Chapel.
LEGOLAND Windsor’s Brick or Treat
For families visiting Windsor this October, Brick or Treat at LEGOLAND Windsor Resort is one of the biggest events of the season.
For 2026, Brick or Treat runs on 10–11 October and from 17 October–1 November.
The resort gets a Halloween makeover with LEGO Monsters, themed entertainment, character meet-and-greets and Halloween activities alongside the usual rides and attractions.
It’s particularly well timed for October half-term and is a great reason to turn a LEGOLAND day trip into a few days exploring Windsor.
See a Show at Theatre Royal Windsor
One of the pleasures of staying in central Windsor is having the Theatre Royal right on your doorstep.
There’s a particularly strong programme during October 2026, including:
- The Mousetrap – 12–17 October
- The Magic of Motown – 18 October
- The Turn of the Screw – 20–24 October
- The Snow Queen – 27–31 October
There are also productions earlier in the month, including The Anastasia File and Wilko: Love and Death ‘N’ Rock and Roll.
The theatre sits beside Windsor Castle, making it easy to combine a show with dinner and an overnight stay in the town centre.
Enjoy Windsor Great Park in Autumn
If you prefer being outdoors, autumn is one of the best times of year to explore Windsor Great Park.
Crisp mornings, changing leaves and miles of open space make it ideal for a family walk or a slower day after sightseeing.
The Long Walk is perhaps the most famous route. Starting close to Windsor Castle, it stretches towards the Copper Horse and gives you one of Windsor’s classic views.
You don’t need to tackle the whole thing either. Even a shorter walk from the Castle is a lovely way to see another side of Windsor.
Walk Across the Bridge to Eton
One of the easiest things to do in Windsor is also one of our favourites.
Walk down towards the River Thames, cross Windsor Bridge and you’re in Eton.
It’s perfect for a relaxed autumn wander, with historic buildings, independent shops, cafés and pubs to discover along the High Street.
Because Windsor and Eton are so compact, you can explore both without needing the car.
Take an Autumn Walk Along the Thames
The River Thames is only moments from Windsor town centre and makes a lovely change of pace from the main attractions.
Walk along the river, watch the boats, stop for coffee or lunch and enjoy the views back towards Windsor.
If the weather behaves, it’s an easy way to spend a couple of hours without having to plan or book anything.
Halloween in Windsor
There is more to Halloween in Windsor than LEGOLAND.
Around half-term you’ll find seasonal activities and family events across the area. For something rather different, Windsor: The Dark Side Halloween walking tours are scheduled for 30 and 31 October 2026, exploring some of the darker stories behind Windsor’s royal history.
Nearby Ascot also hosts its Fireworks Spectacular Family Raceday on 31 October, combining racing with a large fireworks display.
It’s worth checking what’s on before your stay as new seasonal events are often added as October approaches.
Make a Weekend of It
One of the advantages of staying in central Windsor is that you don’t have to choose just one attraction.
A two or three-night autumn break could easily include Windsor Castle, LEGOLAND, the Theatre Royal, Windsor Great Park, Eton and time to enjoy the restaurants, cafés and shops around town.
And because so much is within walking distance, you can park the car and explore Windsor at a much more relaxed pace.
